Accident compensation for Christmas shopper

A 61 year old woman who spent Christmas 2006 on crutches has won thousands of pounds of compensation.

The claimant was doing her Christmas shopping in Nottingham in November 2006 when she slipped over the wet platform at the train station, breaking her leg.

She was taken to hospital straightaway where she had a metal plate inserted into her leg. The claimant took legal action in order, she said, to force the station operators, to accept responsibility for the accident and improve the state of the station's platforms to make them less slippery in wet weather. She said: "The accident has really affected my confidence in wet and cold conditions and I am now much more wary of where I walk.

"The accident meant I had to cancel Christmas because I couldn't get out to do any shopping. This year, however, I have been able to get my Christmas shopping completed and everyone should receive their gifts on time."

The station operators admitted liability for the accident and settled out of court for an undisclosed sum.
The claimant's solicitor said: "My client's Christmas was ruined by her accident. What was supposed to be an enjoyable day spent Christmas shopping ended up in Accident and Emergency. It is only right that she is compensated."
