Schoolgirl receives four-figure damages for waterslide accident
10:53:00 Tuesday 16th December 2008A 13-year-old girl who crashed into a lifeguard on a water park slide has received accident compensation.
The lifeguard was unaware that the girl was on the Sidewinder thrill ride at a Water Park in Blackpool, thinking it had closed for the end of the day.
The girl suffered severe concussion after crashing into the worker. She was taken to hospital straightaway. Her father said: "My daughter had concussion for around four of five days and it was some time before she was fully active again."
Her family took their case to court, given that the park's health and safety rules clearly warn staff they must not walk on the rides until all visitors have left the premises. The schoolgirl was awarded a four-figure sum of accident compensation.
The park's managing director, apologised for the incident: "The lifeguard at the bottom of the slide had thought the last rider had come down and walked on the surface against all procedures," he said. "The person in question was given a final written warning and was very apologetic. It was a one off accident.
"There has never in the 22 years I have been here there has never been an incident like this. I apologised to the family and we sent them some flowers. We accepted liability straight away and are sorry that this happened."
