Over £5 million paid in compensation to nurses
14:37:00 Friday 2nd January 2009A total of £5,061,140 was paid out in compensation to nurses as a result personal injury and employment cases in 2008.
The figure was announced by the chief executive and general secretary of the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) which represents nurses in such legal disputes. He added that the compensation exposes the extent to which the safety of healthcare workers is being neglected by their employers. He said, “The fact that the RCN has secured over £5 million in compensation for members over the last year shows our commitment to getting fair treatment for nurses and healthcare workers, and to making sure that employers treat staff well and secure a safe working environment.”
He went on to point out that the money could have been spent on frontline resources if employers ensured the safety and well-being of staff. Over £3 million of the money was paid as personal injury compensation by the Personal Injury and Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority.
Health services also had to cover the legal costs of the disputes. The RCN has advised the NHS and private employers to “improve on these areas [employee safety and welfare] to reduce the distress caused to staff and the money spent on compensation."
