A survey by government poll-taker YouGov, has found that people who are injured at work may well receive more compensation than they expect.

The survey of 1,970 adults found that people expect modest compensation payouts for less serious accidents at work. For example, 46% of those questioned said they would expect to receive £5,000 or less in compensation if they broke a leg while at work. Similarly, 61% of those surveyed said they would expect less than £5,000 if they fractured an arm at work.

These estimations are below the average payouts for these types of accidents according to legal information provider, Lawtel. The firm claims the average payout for a broken leg is £8,650, plus £2,900 in lost earnings; while compensation for a broken arm totals £6,000 plus £2,000 for loss of earnings, on average.

For more serious injuries, many of the people surveyed maintained modest expectations; with 20% expecting £100,000 or less if they were in an accident and lost the use of both legs. A personal injury lawyers claim most people would receive over £200,000 in compensation for such a serious accident at work.
