Injured paramedic gets date for compensation hearing

A paramedic who lost his eye after being attacked by a gang of youths while in his ambulance, has been given a date for his hearing to claim more compensation, after a seven year wait.

He received a limited payout after the incident, which involved a 10lb concrete slab being thrown at his ambulance while it was travelling along the A52 in 2001. However, the man has since gathered 3,500 names on a petition to support his claim for more compensation.

The Criminal Injuries Compensation Association admitted that the media attention that the delivery of the petition to Downing Street attracted, helped to bring his case to the Association’s attention.

The paramedic says he hopes to use the money to study to become a nurse, "It has been a seven-year battle but now that I know for sure we have a hearing I can start to apply for nursing training starting in September.”

His injuries were severe, losing an eye and having to have a metal plate fitted into his skull. He also had to teach himself to talk again after the incident, after which he fell into a nine-day drug induced coma.
