Schoolgirl to receive accident compensation after fire-door injury
13:25:00 Wednesday 7th January 2009A County Council has admitted liability for the injury caused to a 6 year old schoolgirl, whose fingertip was cut off when a fire door at her primary school slammed shut in the wind.
The incident happened at a Primary School in Warsop in March 2007. Attempts to re-attach the fingertip, during surgery following the incident, failed.
The girl's family was initially advised that they would need an engineer’s report in order to file their case, which would cost £1,000. However, they were then referred to personal injury specialists, and decided to simply argue that a primary school fire-door should not cause such an injury to a child.
The Solicitor has responded to the Council’s admission by stating, "We are really pleased, both for the child and for the courage and compassion of the council in reassessing the case.” The family is now considering the compensation award in relation to the future treatment the girl may need.
Her parents say she is “quite self conscious” about her finger and may not be able to have surgery to fix it until she is older.
The council says it has now taken measures to prevent a repeat accident occurring at the Primary School and has issued guidance on preventing door-related accidents to schools in the region.
