Darlington dustman suffers serious work accident

A Darlington-based dustman suffered a horrific workplace accident in which he was crushed by a reversing truck.

The worker, who was employed by the local council, was rendered unconscious when the wagon crushed him against a wall in Salisbury Terrace, Darlington. He was immediately taken to Darlington Memorial Hospital, where he required stitches to repair a head wound. He is still off work due to his injuries.

Another council employee said of the work accident, “The wagon was backing into a lane when it hit him with the bin lift. The council employee was very fortunate not to have been more seriously injured,” added the source.

Some of the man's colleagues blamed the accident on increased pressure at work, saying that they have had to cut corners 'a hell of a lot' in a bid to save council cash.

But Darlington County Council have said that increased pressure was not the course of the accident and that it would be fully investigated by the councils health and safety team, with appropriate action being taken to prevent any such incident happening in the future.

The man has not yet decided whether to pursue a compensation claim.
