The injury claim experts
We understand that the thought of claiming compensation after a cycling accident is daunting – especially if you are still suffering from injuries. Our advisers understand what a difficult time this is for you and your family, and we can talk you through what happened and help you make the first steps in your compensation claim.

No-one expects to jump on their bike to go to work or to the shops and expect a careless driver to hit and injure them. All drivers have a duty of care towards other road users. The reality is, cyclists are officially classed as vulnerable road users. This can be very reassuring because as a cyclist it means you have an additional level of protection. This is because the Highway Code expects car and other vehicle drivers to take extra care when driving, for example, they must always look out for cyclists when pulling out from junctions or turning left or right. Drivers are also warned to check their mirrors and blind spots carefully in case there are cyclists nearby.
It is only fair that if you were knocked off your bike because a car driver was oblivious to your presence on the road or failed to check their mirrors, you should be able to claim compensation for your injuries.
Often, the police will be involved after a road accident involving a cyclist. If you know the police were involved, the police incident report will be really important evidence in your claim. And if the driver is charged with an offence (even more so if they are then convicted), this will be even stronger evidence to help your claim. Your specialist lawyer will be able to get this information on your behalf.
Bicycle accidents are not always caused by other road users. Sometimes, they are caused by animals running into the road, hazards left on the road or road defects such as potholes.
It’s not always the case that someone else can be held responsible for someone’s injuries, but it is wise to discuss the circumstances of your claim with a specialist injury lawyer before deciding there’s nothing you can do about making a claim.
For example, the local highway authority is responsible for repairing potholes and similar defects in the road to minimise the risk of injury. If these are not carried out within a reasonable amount of time and an accident happens resulting in an injury, the highway authority should rightly be held liable.
And while no one can prevent a wild animal, such as a squirrel or fox, running into the road and into a cyclist’s path; a dog walker, who is not keeping their dog under control and the dog runs into the road causing an accident, can be held responsible if you suffer injuries.
Bicycle injuries can be minor or they can be devastating. Even minor injuries caused by someone else deserve compensating, for the simple reason that the accident should never have happened at all. But in serious cycling accident cases, the physical injuries can be significant and lead to long term problems or disability.
Thankfully, the law considers the full nature and extent of the incident in order to determine what is a fair and just amount of compensation for the victim. To get started on your claim, you just need to give us a call on 0800 0511 511. When we speak with you, our friendly advisers will take a few details about what happened and what injuries you sustained.
They will then help you access free specialist legal advice from experienced bicycle injury lawyers. You’ll then have a reassuringly clear picture of how your claim can proceed.
Your solicitor will always work towards settling your claim as soon as possible to enable you to get on with your life.
We know compensation cannot repair the physical damage done to you – or the damage to your bicycle. But it can help you on the road to recovery and ease the financial burden if you need to take time off work as you recover from your injuries.

If you’ve been injured in a cycling accident, you can claim for your actual injuries, whether that’s severe cuts and bruises, a broken leg or head injuries. The money you receive for the injuries themselves are called ‘general damages’ and the amount you receive depends on the nature and extent of your injuries.
There is no average sum of money paid out for cycling injuries because they vary so much. Some people suffer mild injuries and others sadly have serious injuries, but your specialist lawyer will be happy to talk you through this.
You can also claim for any accident-related financial losses (‘special damages’).
Personal injury compensation
A claim can be made for injuries sustained and for pain and suffering.
Damaged bicycle and possessions
The cost of replacing your bicycle, helmet and any other items of clothing and protective gear.
Loss of earnings
In addition to your normal wages, you may have lost out on potential overtime, bonuses or commission because of your injuries. You can claim all these back if they relate to the accident.
Medical expenses and rehabilitation costs
This can include the cost of buying equipment to help with your rehabilitation, and the cost of private medical treatment.
Travel expenses
This could be for example, taxis or public transport to hospital appointments.
‘Hit and run’ accidents involving cyclists do happen but this should not prevent you from making an injury claim.
If the driver is known (or eventually traced) and it turns out they were not insured, you need not worry because you can still make an injury claim. The law recognises that victims who are injured in such circumstances should not be penalised for criminal behaviour, such as driving without insurance or failing to stop at the scene of an accident.
Therefore, you can lodge an injury claim with an organisation called the Motor Insurers’ Bureau (MIB) – your solicitor will be able to do this for you. However, it is an MIB requirement that the police have been informed of the accident, so if you are a victim of a ‘hit and run’, it’s important to notify the police as soon as you can.
